A lot of the housing in the city is older terraced and Victorian property, and on those the first thing we look at is the earthing and bonding.

Main equipotential bonding is the connection of the internal metallic water and gas pipes to the main earth terminal of the electrical installation. Main bonding conductors are usually wired in 10mm cable, and the earth cable should be connected to a bonding clamp no more than 600mm from your gas meter.

It is not a glamorous job and it is not an expensive one, but a house with no main bonding is a house where a fault has nowhere safe to go. We check it on every Electrical Installation Condition Report we carry out.

If your wiring is coated in black rubber, that was phased out in the 1960s so it could be sixty years old or more. Lead or fabric coated cable is older still. Modern cables use pvc insulation.
