Overview
The first thing nearly every customer says on the doorstep is that it is never sunny here. It is a fair comment about the weather and it is the wrong question about the panels.
Panels work on daylight, not direct sunshine, so a bright overcast day in June still generates. What they do not do is generate in the evening, which is when most households actually use their electricity.
That is the whole problem with solar in a working household. You make your power at two in the afternoon when nobody is in, and you buy it back at seven when everybody is.
Why storage changes the sums
A battery stores what the panels make during the day so you can use it in the evening at your own cost rather than buying it at the full unit rate.
We would recommend most households look at panels and storage together rather than panels on their own. It is the difference between a modest saving and one worth having.
Useful information
- Being MCS certified is what allows your installation to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee, which is the payment you receive for the surplus you export back to the grid. Without MCS certification you cannot claim it.
- Panel output is quoted in kWp (kilowatt peak), which is the output under standard test conditions, not what your roof will do on a wet Tuesday in November.
- Every solar installation has to be notified to the distribution network operator. Smaller systems are notified after commissioning, larger ones need permission before we connect them, and we handle that either way.
- A DC isolator, correct labelling and an accessible means of shutting the array down are all part of a proper installation. Please note the fire service will want to find them.
